RICHMOND – PartnerMD announces that Jackie Oken, MEd, NBC-HWC, Director of Wellness Programs and Services, passed the first ever Health and Wellness Coach National Boards to earn the new credential: National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC). Ms. Oken is one of only four National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coaches in the Richmond area.

As a National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach, Ms. Oken has mastered a set of core competencies for appropriately developing the coaching relationship, communication techniques, processes for behavior change, health and wellness knowledge, ethics and professional development, and more.

The profession of health and wellness coaching has emerged to address an urgent and widespread need to increase individuals’ engagement in health-giving lifestyles that prevent and treat chronic conditions. While the profession has grown, so unfortunately has variability in the standards of health and wellness coaches who are employed from clinical settings to universities, health plans to private practices and health clubs.

To finally deliver consistent standards for the new profession, the International Consortium Of Health And Wellness Coaches (ICHWC), a consortium of thought leaders and 52 health and wellness coach training and education programs, and the National Board Of Medical Examiners, which develops and administers physician licensing examinations in the United States, joined forces. Together they established long overdue standards for health and wellness coach training and education programs, as a well as a National Board Certification.

Ms. Oken coaches individual clients and groups through an entire spectrum of health related behaviors and habits, including but not limited to wellness programs focusing on nutrition, weight loss, improved sleep, and stress management. In addition, she provides health and wellness coaching services on a one-on-one basis as part of the PartnerMD Advanced Physicals.
