PartnerMD is excited to announce the hiring of Dr. Steven Bishop as a new physician in the Richmond office and as the company’s director of wellness. An internal medicine physician, Dr. Bishop combines astute clinical care with a passion for wellness to treat patients throughout their adult lives. He will join PartnerMD on Dec. 2 after five years as a physician of general medicine and primary care in VCU Health’s Department of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Steven Bishop, concierge doctor at PartnerMD RichmondIn making the switch to concierge medicine, Dr. Bishop is excited to use the extra time he gets to develop meaningful relationships with his patients.

“I believe a trusting relationship is critical to success in healthcare,” he said. “It’s hard to treat patients and restore health if they don’t trust you, and it’s difficult to develop that trust without time. That’s what I’m excited about getting back to at PartnerMD.”

In his role as director of wellness, Dr. Bishop will continue to grow PartnerMD’s preventative wellness programs and services, plus lead the clinical integration between PartnerMD’s physicians and health coaches so that everyone is working to help patients achieve optimal health. Current programs include unlimited one-on-one health coaching for PartnerMD members and additional services like weight loss and insomnia classes.

“Wellness goes beyond just diet and nutrition,” he said. “Learning what to eat is the easy part. It also includes physical activity, as well as psychological and spiritual well-being. The goal at PartnerMD is not to just get people through their next appointment, but to get them well and help them maintain it.”

Dr. Bishop takes a holistic approach to his patients’ wellness pursuits, helping them with diet and nutrition (particularly on keto and low-carb diets), stress, sleeping, food addiction and substance abuse, depression, anxiety, and more.

He received his medical degree from the University of Virginia and completed a residency in internal medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Dr. Bishop lives in Richmond with his wife, Rachel; his two children, Ellie and Liam; and their two giant labs, Bruce and Lucy. He is the second physician to join PartnerMD in the last six weeks. Dr. Elizabeth Bigelow started in late October.
