MetabolizePMD: Low-Carb Diets — An Introduction
A low-carb diet is a popular, and effective, way to lose weight. In this video, Midlothian health coach Jaime Monsen provides an introduction to low-carb diets, what your goal should be, and how you can get started. Watch the video below and read on for a full recap.
What are the basics of low-carb diets?
The big thing about going low-carb is to pull back on consuming added sugars and simple carbohydrates and really monitoring your total carbohydrate intake. The goal is to limit the amount of processed foods you're eating that forces your blood sugar to rise. When our blood sugar rises quickly due to food, our body releases insulin to "move" the food, mostly into our fat cells. That creates weight gain and other medical risks, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Some low-carb diets reduce your intake moderately, and some are much more aggressive.
What are the different approaches to a low-carb diet?
A moderate approach would be to keep your daily intake between 50g and 100g of carbohydrates. An aggressive approach would be to reduce it even more, to between 30g and 50g of carbs. The most aggressive is probably keto, which requires just 20g of carbohydrates per day.
