HarmonizePMD: The 6 Myths of Meditation
As a certified meditation teacher, Owings Mills health coach Yvonne Bull teaches people how to get the most out of their meditation sessions. But she also notices that sometimes people come to meditation sessions with preconceived notions. In this video, Yvonne explains the myths of meditation and what it's really all about. Watch the video below (apologies for the sideways orientation) and read on for the recap.
The 6 Myths of Meditation
Myth No. 1: Meditation is about silencing and emptying your mind.
The Truth: Meditation is about strengthening your mind and helping you become aware of your thoughts, and realizing they are sometimes simply thoughts and sometimes they are something we should work on. It's about training your mind to work on how you react to your thoughts. It's all about breath.
Myth No. 2: You have to quiet your mind.
The Truth: No you don't have to quiet your mind. You have to learn to train your mind to react to your thoughts.
Myth No. 3: It takes years of dedicated practice.
The Truth: You can begin meditating today. It doesn't have to be a set amount of time. It just has to be the amount of time you have to work with. You can meditate while sitting in a chair, lying on the floor, sitting against the wall, or even sitting in your car.
Myth No. 4: Meditation is escapism.
The Truth: Meditation helps you get in touch with who you truly are and tune into what you are reacting to and how you are reacting. It's total awareness, not escapism.
Myth No. 5: Meditation is spiritual. It's religious.
The Truth: Meditation is solely about you. It's an individual thing. It is trying to quiet the noise in your mind. Your mind is always creating chaos. And through breath, you can see through the chaos and quiet the chatter.
Myth No. 6: I should have a transcendent experience.
The Truth: Meditation is not about having some crazy experience. It's about calmness. As your meditating, when you find your sense of calm, that's your transcendent experience.
