Favorite Part About Being a Doctor
“Helping patients figure out how to solve their problems and change their lifestyle for the better.”
As an internal medicine doctor in Richmond, Va., Dr. Bishop is passionate about helping his patients improve their lives through better health. He has experience helping healthy adults adjust their lifestyle as they age, as well as helping patients with complex medical diseases manage and improve their health.
“What I try and do as a doctor is figure out what my patients are truly worried about and what they really want to accomplish,” he says. “Then, we can put together a practical, detailed plan on how we can get there together.”
Dr. Bishop takes a holistic approach to his patients’ health and wellness pursuits, helping them with diet and nutrition (particularly keto and low-carb diets), stress, sleeping, food addiction and substance abuse, depression, anxiety, and more. He stays up-to-date on cutting-edge health trends, including those related to antibiotic use, diets like intermittent fasting, lipid management for cholesterol, and inflammation.
In addition to seeing patients, he serves as PartnerMD’s Director of Wellness. In that role, he leads PartnerMD’s Wellness Program, which includes health coaching from in-house, certified health coaches and various programs dedicated to weight loss, stress management and sleep, physical fitness, and cognitive health.
How does Dr. Bishop describe his overall philosophy as a doctor? “Eat healthier. Sleep better. Exercise more. And use as few medications as possible.”
Dr. Bishop believes a trusting relationship is critical to success in healthcare. “It’s hard to treat patients and restore health if they don’t trust you, and it’s difficult to develop that trust without time. I get to spend the time necessary to do that at PartnerMD.”
After determining his patients’ struggles and what they want to improve, Dr. Bishop provides holistic care to his patients to help them achieve their goals. And by focusing on the whole picture of health and wellness, “we can often solve the underlying issues while minimizing the use of medication as much as possible,” he says.
Dr. Bishop has known he wanted to be a doctor for a long time. “Since I was 6 or 7 years old,” he says. “I just loved going to the doctor and knew that’s what I wanted to be.” After graduating from the University of Virginia Medical School, he spent five years in the VCU Health Department of Internal Medicine before joining PartnerMD in 2019.
Outside the office, he loves learning about personal finance and real estate investing. He also is actively involved at his church and recently went on a medical mission trip to help underserved people in Nicaragua.
Dr. Bishop lives in Chester, Va., with his wife, two children, and two giant labs. A Disney fanatic, he and his family make sure to visit Disney World twice a year (at least – he’s open to more). Avid travelers, they hope to eventually visit every Disney theme park in the world.
