Favorite Part About Being a Doctor
“I love talking to my patients, helping them stay healthy, and being there for them to help get them through tough times.”
Over her last 25+ years as a family medicine doctor in Midlothian, Va., Dr. Susan Scharpf has developed a famous sticky-note addiction. “I find that people heal better when they feel cared for and secure. So I keep reminders on my desk about patients and call when one hasn’t been in for a while or if someone is having surgery.”
Dr. Scharpf’s attentive, compassionate approach focuses on her patients’ overall well-being. “Being a doctor involves so much more than simply monitoring blood pressure, cholesterol, and weight,” she says. “The whole person needs to be taken into account — the emotional, physical, and spiritual aspects of their life.”
For all her patients, she aims to provide comprehensive medical care with the personal attention they deserve. “Anything I recommend to a patient needs to be thoroughly researched and vetted, which takes time,” she says. “At PartnerMD, I have the space to deeply explore factors that might be causing or influencing a patient’s symptoms or the underlying problem. Think stress, trauma, and so forth.”
“The first thing I want my patients to know is that I’m here to help guide them,” Dr. Scharpf says. “I bring the medical expertise, but I always listen to their concerns and motivations so we can work together to improve.”
Her recommendations can include alternative therapies, when appropriate and as long as the patient is open to such options. “Alternative therapies simply give doctors a bigger toolkit to work with,” she says.
Outside the office, Dr. Scharpf loves to explore the great outdoors. An avid hiker, she and her husband raised two sons who now live on the West Coast, and at various times they’ve all been hiking to various peaks throughout the country. She enjoys traveling to California to see family, biking, and the Richmond Symphony (she played flute growing up through school).
She is an assistant professor and small group leader in the department of family practice at the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University, where she taught the practice of clinical medicine.
She also completed the Geriatric Scholars certification program at VCU in 2005 and the Geriatric Scholar faculty development program at the Virginia Geriatric Education Center in 2015.
