We've all been there. The hotel and travel are booked, bags are packed, and you're counting down the days until vacation. Then a familiar thought creeps in: What am I going to do without my fitness routine?

You don't need to maintain your normal workout routine on vacation. Staying consistent with healthy habits like walking, beach workouts, recreational activities, and portable fitness options can help you stay active and return home without losing momentum.

As a health coach at PartnerMD, one of the main questions I get during the summer is how to stay active outside of a normal schedule.

I work with members to create a plan that eases their worries of losing progress they've worked hard to build. Whether that means planning a workout schedule or guidance on equipment to pack, just a few quick and simple tips can help them feel confident as they take on their next trip.

In this article, you'll learn:

  • Why the habit of movement is more important than perfection.
  • How the beach can become an effective workout space for walking or running, bodyweight exercises, and balance training.
  • Simple ways to stay active while traveling, from portable exercise equipment to workout videos and recreational activities.
  • The importance of setting realistic expectations so you can enjoy vacation and return home ready to resume your routine.

1. Practice Habits, Not Perfection

One of the biggest concerns people have on vacation is that a few days away from exercise will break their momentum.

In reality, vacation fitness isn't about maintaining perfection. It's about keeping up with the habit of movement. The goal isn't to replicate your normal workout routine but to stay active in ways that fit your environment and schedule.

Even subtle movement while traveling can help reinforce healthy habits and make it easier to return to your regular fitness routine when you get home.

2. Turn the Beach into Your Gym

Your fitness routine doesn't have to include equipment to be effective. In fact, using the beach can be more beneficial than your traditional workout.

One of the many reasons beach workouts are surprisingly effective is because sand creates an unstable surface. Your feet sink and shift with every step, causing your ankles, calves, hips, and core muscles to work harder to stabilize your body, while the sand provides a comfortable ground to protect your joints.

Exercising in the sand might sound less intense, but it actually increases the amount of energy you exert. Research published in the Journal of Experimental Biology found that walking on sand requires approximately 2.1 to 2.7 times more energy than walking on a firm surface.

With this in mind, consider bodyweight exercises the next time you're on the beach. They're a great way to challenge balance, coordination, and strength. A sample workout might include:

  • 15 Squats
  • 10 Lunges
  • 30 Seconds Jumping Jacks or Running Planks
  • 30 Seconds Crab Crawls

3. Pack Light and Stay Consistent

When it comes to portable exercise equipment to bring on vacation, there are many options that are light, compact, and easily packable.

Resistance bands, exercise sliders, and a yoga mat can help you maintain a simple workout routine while traveling. These lightweight items easily fit into most suitcases and can be used for exercises like squats, lunges, planks, and mobility work.

If you're driving to your destination and have extra space, you could also bring a kettlebell or medicine ball for additional strength-training options. However, most travelers can stay active and maintain healthy habits with minimal equipment.

4. Follow Guided Workouts Anywhere

Whether you use a smartphone, tablet, or laptop, workout videos are a great source for accessing fitness content on the go. Switch up your environment by exercising near the beach and pool or use your workout as an opportunity to explore a new area during your trip.

With workout videos, you can modify your search based on keywords and criteria you'd like the workout to be centered around. From Pilates to yoga to strength training, you can set the tone for intensity and areas you want to target.

Research shows that video-guided exercise programs can help improve physical performance, making them an effective option for those who don't have access to a normal gym or fitness classes.

5. Vacation Activity Still Counts

Movement doesn't always have to be structured to be beneficial. Incorporating some type of recreational activity can help you maintain momentum, keep your body moving, and support your overall health. This might include:

  • Swimming in the ocean or pool
  • Playing frisbee
  • Joining a game of beach volleyball
  • Participating in beach games
  • Paddleboarding
  • Taking a long walk

Stay active through activities you enjoy while making the most out of your vacation experience. Even simple options like taking the stairs, walking to nearby attractions, or exploring on foot can add meaningful movement without feeling like a workout.

6. Reset

Vacation should leave you feeling refreshed, not guilty. While it's natural to worry about losing momentum when you're away from your normal routine, staying active doesn't require perfect workouts or a set schedule. Whether you're walking on the beach, swimming, or fitting in a quick workout, every bit of movement helps reinforce healthy habits.

7. Set Realistic Expectations

Focus on consistency over intensity, set realistic expectations, and give yourself permission to enjoy your time away. If you need help creating a flexible fitness plan that works with your travel schedule and goals, your PartnerMD health coach can help you stay on track while making the most of your vacation.
