If you’re considering concierge medicine, you’re likely weighing both the medical and financial sides of the decision — including how tools like HSAs or FSAs fit in.
At PartnerMD, we’re one of the leading concierge medical providers in the U.S., and we hear this question almost daily:
Can you use an HSA or FSA to pay for concierge doctor fees?
In this article, we’ll break down the answer and clarify what’s eligible, what’s not, and how to get the most out of your spending account.
In most cases, no — you cannot use an HSA or FSA to pay for your concierge membership fee itself.
That’s because the membership fee is considered a retainer or access fee, not a billable medical service — and therefore not a qualified medical expense.
However, HSAs and FSAs would work the same with concierge care for medical expenses as they do with traditional physician practices.
The list of medical expenses that could be covered by your insurance can be quite large, but they could include:
We always recommend checking with your plan to ensure you have a clear understanding of what kind of expenses can be applied to your HSA or FSA.
Quick rule of thumb: If traditional health insurance would cover it, an HSA or FSA likely does too.
Your goal should be to use your account for what’s eligible — and avoid surprises. Here’s how:
Request an itemized invoice. Ask if your provider can separate billable services from your membership fee. Most concierge practices will already do this.
Keep your receipts for additional medical expenses you incur. You’ll need documentation to submit claims or reimburse yourself.
Verify options with your plan administrator. Employer-specific rules may vary, especially for FSAs.
At the end of the day, concierge membership fees aren’t eligible for HSA or FSA reimbursement — but many of the medical services that fall within or alongside your membership often are.
If you're serious about maximizing your healthcare investment, knowing exactly what you can and can’t apply to your spending account puts you one step ahead.
Now that you’ve got the facts, your next step is to deepen your understanding of how concierge medicine works — from costs and benefits to what sets it apart from traditional care.
